Anderson County was formed on March 24, 1846, after Kenneth Lewis Anderson, who was a prominent member of congress and was the last vice president of the Republic of Texas. People from all over the state visit Anderson county to watch balloon launchings at the United States government’s scientific balloon base, enjoy the Dogwood trails in the spring, and relax in picturesque train rides to Rusk on the Texas State Railroad. For a glimpse of old Texas, there are almost a dozen antique stores in downtown Palestine that are worth visiting. Food choices are varied and you can find some of the best meringue in the state in Anderson County restaurants.
