Located near the geographic center of Texas is Brown County. Named after Capt. Henry Stevenson Brown, one of the first Anglo-Americans in the area and a company commander at the Battle of Velasco, the county was officially organized in 1858, with the town of Brownwood serving as the county seat. The manufacturing plants, distribution centers, as well as the agriculture sector, which produces cattle, hay, peanuts, pecans, wheat, meat goats, and hogs, sustain the economy. Locals and visitors enjoy the walking trails and scenic nature experience through its Lake Brownwood State Park and the Muse State Wildlife Management Area. Brown County is also known to be the hometown of two popular authors: Katherine Ann Porter and Robert Ervin Howard.
