Located in the Rolling Plains region of central Texas, the Callahan County was established in 1877 and named for James Hughes Callahan, a Texas Ranger and leader of the Callahan expedition. Ranching and feed and fertilizer business, as well as hunting leases, are the main elements of Callahan’s economy, with wheat, sorghum, oats, and cattle as the main produce. Visiting lakes, museums as well as the home of the creator of Conan the Barbarian are some of the recreational activities in the county. Special events that are celebrated by both locals and tourists are the Railhead Day, Barbarian Festival, and Pecan Festival.
