Situated in central East Texas, Cherokee County was named after the area's early residents, the Cherokee Indians. The county was established and organized in 1846 with Rusk as the county seat. Timber, nurseries, some manufacturing, and agriculture are the main players in the county's economy. Primary agricultural products include nursery plants, dairy, beef cattle, hay, and truck crops. For recreation, the residents and tourists can do water sports, fishing, hunting, and visiting tourist spots such as the Texas State Railroad State Historical Park, Caddo Mounds, and Jim Hogg State Historic Sites, Neches River National Wildlife Refuge, Rush Park and I.D. Fairchild State Forest. One of its towns, Jacksonville, also hosts a Tomato Fest in June.
