Coleman County, situated in west-central Texas, was established in 1858 and was formally organized by 1864. Its largest town, Coleman, also serves as the county seat. The county was named after Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and was also General Houston's aide at San Jacinto. Agriculture and petroleum are key players in its economy, with wheat, hay, sorghum, oats, cotton, cattle, sheep, and goats as the primary agricultural products. Ecotourism is also greatly promoted in the county; fishing, hunting, water sports, and visiting city parks, lakes and historic sites among the recreation options, along with the Santa Ana Mountains that are located in the county.
