Coryell County is situated on the Edwards Plateau in Texas. Gatesville is the county seat of Coryell County. James Coryell was the namesake of the town. He was a Texas Ranger and a frontiersman who was killed by the Indians while protecting the settlers. The county’s settlement goes way back to 4500 BC. Some of the tribes that occupied the place were the Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche. James Coryell was killed by the Comanche Indians. Before the area was organized, it was known as Robertson’s County. In 1854 when it was officially formed it was named as what it is today.
