Dawson County is situated in Texas and its county seat is Lamesa. There used to be a Dawson County which was founded in 1856 but it was disbanded just ten years later. The current Dawson County was originally founded in 1876. It was organized in 1905 and was named for Nicholas Mosby Dawson who was a soldier in the Texas Revolution. In 1943, on land owned by a local farmer Abner Spraberry, one of the largest oil fields in the U.S was discovered. The oil field is named the Spraberry Trend after the farmer. It is the third-largest oil field in the U.S based on the remaining reserves.
