Deaf Smith County is placed in Texas and the county seat is Hereford. The city of Hereford is known as the “Beef Capital of the World”. In 1876 the county was founded but was not organized until the year 1890. Erastus “Deaf” Smith is the namesake of the town. He was a partially deaf soldier and scout and served in the Texas Revolution and was the first person to reach the Alamo after its downfall. Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative headquarters are situated in Hereford. This cooperative distributes electricity to Deaf Smith County and three other counties nearby.
