DeWitt County is a county situated in Texas. Cuero is the county seat. The county was named for Green DeWitt who was the founder of an early colony in Texas. The county was originally founded in 1846. Green DeWitt was given the right to settle four hundred families in the area from the Coahulla y Tejas in 1825. Settlers arrived from Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, and some other Southern states from 1826 to 1831. In the year 1850, Clinton became the county seat of DeWitt County, before it was changed to Cuero which became the county seat in 1876.
