Gray County is a county located in the state of Texas. Pampa is the county seat of Gray County. The county itself was named for Peter W. Gray who was a Confederate lawyer, but also a soldier in the American Civil War. The county was initially founded in 1876 and was originally organized in 1902. Gray County was formed from the Bexar District. Comanche and Kiowas were settling the area until the Red River War which occurred in 1874. Ranchers began to settle in the area three years later. The Santa Fe Railway and the Southern Kansas Railway were the first railroads that reached the county.
