Hale County is a county set in the state of Texas. The county seat of Hale County is Plainview. The county was founded in 1876 and officially organized twelve years later in 1888. Lt. John C. Hale is the namesake of the town. He was a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. The Santa Fe Railway arrived in the county seat in 1906. The Plainview Site, which is considered a National Historic Landmark since 1961, was discovered in 1944. Archeologists found remains of around one hundred extinct bison that were twice the size of today’s buffalo. Oil was discovered in 1946.
