Henderson County was established in 1846 and was named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first Attorney General of the Republic of Texas. Later in life, he served as the first governor of the state of Texas. The county seat of Henderson County is Athens City, which was named after Athens, Alabama, and not the Greek City. Notable sights to visit in Henderson County include the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center and the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society. Part of the Cedar Creek Reservoir is also located in Henderson County and it’s a popular vacation site for many people around the state.
