Hopkins County was founded in 1846 and was named after David Hopkins, who was an early settler in the area. While Hopkins County was known as Dairy Capital of Texas in the early 80s, it has slowly declined in the late 90s as dairy production has slowly shifted towards the Panhandle. You can still find some of the best dairy in the state in Hopkins County even though it no longer is a major dairy producer. Hopkins County is home to the Dawson Springs Bar-B-Q festival in July and the Christ the King Old Fashioned Barbeque Picnic Every September where many Bar-B-Q afficionados travel from miles around just to partake in the local food offerings.
