Houston County, not to be confused with Houston City, is a county located near the eastern part of Texas and was established in 1837, making it the oldest county in the state. The county was named after Sam Houston, a president of the Republic of Texas and Governor of Texas. Houston County was one of 46 dry counties (where alcohol was prohibited) until voters in 2007 voted to legalize the sale of alcohol in the county in a special election. Many fishing afficionados flock to Houston County to try their luck at the Houston County lake where many “Big Bass” records have been set. The Mission Tejas State Park can also be found in the county where people can camp, picnic, hike and enjoy time with the family all within the vicinity of the site of Texas’ first Spanish Mission.
