Howard County was established in 1882 and was named in honor of Volney E. Howard, a US congressman who was from Texas. Howard County specializes in petrochemical production with very minimal agricultural products such as cotton, beef and hay. Howard County’s seat, Big Spring, was actually named after a big spring that was discovered in the county. The big spring in the county is arguably one of the most significant springs in the county with many important archeological finds around the spring. Aside from the Big Spring, tourists and locals can enjoy hiking in the Comanche Trail Park, Native Plant Trail, and many other historical sites.
