Hunt county was founded in 1846 and was named after Memucan Hunt Jr., the first Republic of Texas Minister to the United States. The Texas A&M University-Commerce is located in Hunt County, which is the third largest institution in the Texas A&M university System. The county is also home to the Audie Murphy/American Cotton museum which was named in honor of the most decorated American Soldier in World War II. The museum features military exhibits from Murphy as well as other veterans from the War. Another worthwhile stop in the county is the Heritage Garden of Hunt County where you can find Native Texas plants and see demos on composting, water conservation, and gardening practices in Texas.
