Jasper County was originally a municipality in Mexico which became a county under the Republic of Texas in 1837. The county was named in honor of William Jasper, an American Revolutionary hero who died while trying to plant the American Flag in the storming of the Savannah in 1779. Jasper county produces a mix of agricultural products and petrochemical production. The county is home to around 800 farms and ranches that are divided almost equally between woodlands, pasture, and vegetable crops. Pecans are also grown in Jasper county which makes it a popular local ingredient.
