The county of Shackelford, located west of the Texas state, was established in 1858 and organized in 1874. It was named after Dr. Jack Shackelford, hero of the Texas Revolution. This county has been economically dependent on its ranching, oil, some manufacturing, and hunting leases’ industries; beef cattle, wheat, hay, and cotton were its principal agricultural products. It also features interesting historical and recreational sites from the Fort Griffin State Historic Site to The Prairie Theater, where the oldest outdoor musical extravaganza in Texas called the Fort Griffin Fandangle is being held every June. Furthermore, barbecues, steaks, pizzas, and Mexican specialties are dominantly served in this area.
