Wilbarger County is a county located in the state of Texas. Vernon is the county seat of Wilbarger County. The county itself is named for Josiah Pugh Wilbarger and Mathias Wilbarger who were early settlers of the area. The county was formed in 1858 and was organized later in 1881. The area where Wilbarger County is located now was used by the Wanderers Band of the Comanche tribes to hunt buffalo. The county was formed when the great buffalo hunts destroyed the herds and when Anglo-Americans made the Indians flee. C.F and J. Doan were the first white settlers in the area. C.F Doan became the county’s first postmaster when Indians, buffalo hunters, and cattlemen settled in the area in 1880.
