Named after the founder and “Father of Texas,” Stephen F. Austin, the Austin County was established in 1837. It is made clear, however, that Austin County is different from Austin City in Travis County and also the state capital. The main industries of Austin County’s economy are agribusiness, tourism, and manufacturing. Grown and cultivated in this area are crops such as hay, cotton, corn, sorghum, pecans, and beef cattle. Recreational activities for its residents and visitors include hunting and fishing, visiting the Stephen F. Austin State Park, joining races at the Lonestar Raceway park and celebrating the Country Livin’ Festival in Bellville, the county seat, every April.
