Culberson County is located in Texas and its county seat is Van Horn. Culberson’s original settlement was in 1911, and the county was organized just one year later. The county was named for David Browning Culberson. He was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War and a lawyer. The county’s first settlement came from El Paso County and one year later Van Horn was chosen the county seat and it stayed like that ever since. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the legislation in 1966 for the Guadalupe Mountains National Park to be established. The park was completed six years later.
