Dallam County is the most northern county situated in Texas. The county’s seat is known as Dalhart. The county was formed from Bexar County in 1876. The county itself was named for James Wilmer Dallam, who was a lawyer that made the first digest of Texas laws. The county seat, Dalhart was named that way because it was between Dallam and Hartley so the first few letters were taken from each name. The area of Dallam County was one of the hardest-hit areas during the Dust Bowl that occurred in the 1930s. Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms.
