Hansford is a county situated in the state of Texas. Spearman is the county seat of Hansford County. John M. Hansford is the namesake of the town. He was a Texas state congressman and judge. The county was founded in 1876 but was officially organized in 1889. The county of Hansford was formed from two different counties: Bexar and Young counties. Norwegian farmers started to settle in the area when Anders L. Mordt was bringing them in in 1909. The oil was discovered in the county in 1937.
