Hartley county was Native American territory until they were removed by the United States army in 1875. After that, the area we now know as Hartley county was settled by ranchers and to this day is still one of the largest producers of milk and cattle products in the state. The county was named after Oliver, Cromwell, and Rufus Harley who were early lawyers in the area. Agricultural output in the county is mostly limited to local consumption and for forage in support of its large livestock sector
