The County of Mason, located at the center of the Texas state, was established in 1858 and was named in reference to Fort Mason. It became known for its abundant wildlife; hunting and fishing were among the popular activities in this area, while cattle raising remains to be the county’s principal economic industry. Mason County not only features some of the best historic sites and landmarks, but it also showcases the beautiful Llano River, where camping, kayaking, and canoeing are highly encouraged. This county is also home to Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve, one of the largest bat nurseries in the United States. Furthermore, you can enjoy a wide variety of food specialties that ranges from local Tex-Mex to international cuisine.
