The County of Matagorda, located at the Coastal Prairie of the Texas state, was founded in 1836 and was named after the Spanish word matagorda which means “thick bush” or “fathead,” in reference to the canebrakes that grew in the area. This county has been dependent on its agriculture, ranching, petrochemicals, and nuclear power industries. Beaches, bird-watching, fishing, and water sports, along with an annual rice festival are among its tourist attractions and activities. A wide variety of food selections from seafood, barbecue, fish and chips, fried chicken, and some international cuisines are also being served in the county of Matagorda.
