Winkler County is a county located in the state of Texas. Kermit is the county seat of Winkler County. Clinton McKamy Winkler is the namesake of the county. He was a Colonel in the Confederate Army. The county was originally established on the twenty-sixth of February 1887 from a portion of Tom Green County. The county was later officially organized in the year 1910. The Texas and Pacific Railway was passing through a nearby Ward County which meant easy access to the area. The railway arrived in the area in 1881.
