The county of Zavala, located in the south-western region of the Texas state, was established in 1858 and organized in 1884. It was named after Lorenzo de Zavala, the first vice president of Texas, and a signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence. This county has been economically dependent on its farming, ranching, food packaging industries; cattle, cotton, pecans, grains, and vegetables were its primary agricultural products. It is also the leading Winter Garden county and it is a popular hunting and fishing area. Its county seat is home to the site of the WWII detention center and the famous Popeye statue, where it celebrates its spinach festival every November. Furthermore, barbecue smokehouses, burger joints, pizza parlors, and Tex-Mex restaurants are dominant in this county.
