Palo Blanco Farm and Ranch is a family-owned and run operation located in south Laredo. They are committed to bringing local, fresh, and organically grown farm-to-table specialty products to the community and providing healthy and sustainable food that you can feel good about! The Palo Blanco family believes in the power of food to bring people together, heal the earth, and save our world. To quote the owner of the ranch, "We love Laredo, the ranch, and food! - and want to share our passion and dedication to caring for the land and our community by providing local and healthy food options that are grown responsibly.  Farming and ranching are in our blood. We are blessed to have grown up on the ranch that has been in our family for over 160+ years! Our family is bringing new and innovative methods of production and products that not only benefit our family, but the environment and our community. We want to share the beauty and bounty of our ranch with Laredo through our high quality farm-to-table specialty products."   They have big plans for the future like adding mushrooms and honey to their ever growing list of products! They also plan to offer educational workshops to teach locals on how to grow their own food and birding tours as well! The currently do not have any livestock on the property but they do have some of the most beautiful birds you can see as they're located in the "birdiest corridor in North America!"

Hydroponics & Aquaponics

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of growing plants without soil, by instead using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Aquaponics refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment, where the plants benefit from the nutrients produced by the fish excrement. Many have turned to these forms of agriculture as land availability becomes increasingly scarce. Hydroponics is not considered a sustainable form of agriculture, as it continuously requires nutrient inputs, without returning them back into the soil or in another form. Aquaponics is considered to be a more sustainable option, as the fish and plants operate in a symbiotic relationship. Both of these methods require highly regulated variables and usually operate in closed systems.
