The monarch butterfly is the official state insect of Texas that was appointed by the Texas Legislature in 1995. Such lovely insects pass through the state twice a year, from Mexico to Canada, and they lay their eggs in the southern part of the state. As the legislature says, “The monarch butterfly is as beautiful and memorable as a Texas sunset, soaring above all other insects in its nobility and determination, and its unique relationship with Texas makes it a truly appropriate symbol of the majestic spirit of the Lone Star State.” Indeed, Texas is home to numerous monarch butterfly gardens; Galveston, Mission, Austin, Dayton, Dallas, and Fort Worth are just a few cities that showcases these butterflies as a way to appreciate and commemorate the state insect.
