Onions were the first-grown chief commercial vegetable in the state of Texas; it has been the leading vegetable crop. It started back in 1898 when the Bermuda onion was introduced into the southern region of the state. A packet of onion seed was sowed near the city of Cotulla and in the following year, such onions were already being shipped to the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Eventually, Texas became the leading producer of onions in the country, overtaking the Bermuda Islands; the Lower Rio Grande Valley has about eighty percent of the state’s acreage while the remaining twenty percent goes to Winter Garden and the Plains area. Thus, onions play a major role in the history and growth of Texas. It annually generates about $350 million in economic impact and it is widely used as a vital ingredient in almost all of the local food specialties.
