Waxahachie is a city in and the county seat of Ellis County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex that is located on I-35E and US 287, in the central part of the county. It was first settled in 1850 and was named after the Indian word that means “cow” or “buffalo.” The town was incorporated in 1871. The establishment of a railroad and the production of agricultural crops accelerated the growth and development of the town in the next decades, closing at 4,215 residents in 1900. Soon enough, the town became highly industrialized. Waxahachie features beautiful architectures; it has been nicknamed Gingerbread City because of that. It is also home to the Ellis County Historical Museum and Gallery, and it holds annual celebrations that include home tours, a Christmas parade, and the Scarborough Renaissance Festival. As of 2010, it has a population of 37,988.
