Joseph Simpkins, a gunsmith, was the first person to settle in Alba, having arrived there in 1843 with his family. Before then, the area was alternately called Simpson’s Prairie and Albia. There have been divergent theories as to how Alba town got its name. According to the first theory, the town’s name was derived from a railroad official’s son. The second one claims that the town was initially planned for white settlers. F. R. Jackson discovered Alba’s oilfield in 1848. The first post office was built in Alba in 1881. The office would close briefly in 1882 only to resume operations later in the same year.
