The Altair unincorporated community is located in Colorado County in the US state of Texas. As at the year 2000, the community had a population of about 30. The Altair community dates back to the late 1880s. The community was initially a cattle loading station known as Stafford’s Ranch. In 1888, a post office was constructed at Stafford’s Ranch, and John Stafford became its first postmaster. The community’s name was later changed to Altair in 1890 to avoid any confusion with a neighboring town with the same name in Fort Bend County. Although the community is yet to be incorporated, Altair boasts a post office whose ZIP code is 77412.
