Art is located along State Highway 29, approximately 90 miles from the city of Austin. Despite being one of the first settlements in Mason County, Art had a population of 16 people by the end of 2016. Art was first occupied in 1856 by German settlers from the neighboring Fredericksburg. The settlers suffered frequent raids from the hostile Indians who wanted to force them out of the land. The Indians could not contend with Germans invading their land. In 1858, the Germans built a log Methodist church that also functioned as a school. The church was later replaced by a stone structure in 1875.
