The unincorporated community of Avalon is located in southern Ellis County and had its first post office built in 1937. It is predominantly a farming community and to this date, still operates one of the few remaining cotton gins in Texas. Part of Ellis County’s glory as a world leading producer of cotton is due to Avalon’s output. The town is credited with producing some of the finest basketball players in the world from the 1960s to 1990s. In 2005, the town started participating in the Texas Six Man Football Program and later formed a strong baseball team that produced several playoffs.
