Baird City in Callahan County in Texas serves as the county’s seat. According to the 2010 census, Baird’s population stood at 1,496. It is named in honor of Matthew Baird, the director and owner of the Texas & Pacific Railway. Baird also owned the Baldwin Locomotive Works that was at the time the largest locomotive firm in the US. Its headquarters was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The then railway depot now operates as a transportation museum and visitor center. Baird was formally founded in 1880. In 1993, Baird was designated as the Antique Capital of West Texas by the Texas Legislature.
