Balmorhea is a city in Reeves County in the US state of Texas. Mexican and Indian settlers farmed around this area much earlier before the town was formally founded. They took advantage of a steady water supply from the nearby San Solomon Springs. Balmorhea was laid out on a 14,000-acre tract of land in 1906. The layout was done at the center of the tract so the springs could water it. The town’s name was derived from the three developers — Rhea, Morrow, and Balcum — who filed the plat for its townsite. A post office and public school were opened in the area in 1908.
