The US city of Beckville was named after Mathew W. Beck, a settler who arrived in the area in 1850. The city opened its first post office in 1857. In 1885, Beckville had a population of 75, two local churches, three general stores, two gristmills, a blacksmith, and one hotel and built its first school in 1889. By 1897, the school had a total enrolment of 151 and three teachers. The town's population was 750 in 1914, before a fire burning down part of it in 1917. By the time of its incorporation in 1929, the Beckville population was approximated at 880.
