Bend is a small and compact unincorporated community bordering San Saba and Lampasas counties in the western central parts of Texas. With a population of about 1,678, the community has survived numerous declines and resurges in its numbers. The first post office in Bend was granted in 1879. The community had a population of 400 in 1890. However, it recorded between 100 and 125 people for the better part of the 20th century. It is widely believed that Bend once had a sulfur lake. However, it was ruined during the Great Depression but was reclaimed as a fishing resort in the 1980s.
