Located in Upshur County in the US state of Texas, the town had 1,343 residents in the 2010 census. The biggest attraction in the area is a lake by the same name which is split into two by the US Highway 80. To the south of Big Lake flows the Sabine River. The town was established after the American Civil war came to an end. It was incorporated in 1926 with a population of 850. The town is also home to Herbert W. Armstrong, a radio evangelist that led one of the most significant religious movements in Texas and the entire country.
