The city is Howard County’s official county seat. It is located at the intersection of the US Interstate 20 and Highway 87. The 2010 census showed that it had a population of 27,282 and is the largest city found between Midland and San Angelo. The name was derived from one big spring that used to flow into the Scenic Mountain. Initially, the name was pluralized as Big Springs, but the residents suddenly dropped the "s" in 1916 for unknown reasons. Among the top attractions here include the Big Springs State Park, Comanche Trail Park, and the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Park.
