In 1945, a Celanese Corporation of America operated a chemical plant that opened primarily to boost the economy of Bishop. Bishop City gets the name after its founder, who ceased operation at the beginning of World War 1. During this city's development campaign, Bishop ensured the availability of power and water systems. Consequently, this encouraged population growth.
