Breckenridge city is located in Stephens County in the US state of Texas. It has a population of 9,307 and serves as Stephens County’s seat. The city served as a stop on the now-defunct Southern Railroad and Wichita Falls. Breckenridge town was founded in 1854 and named Picketville after Bill Picket — a rancher living in the area at the time, or the structure of the town’s earliest homes. Stephens County would later be established in 1876 with Picketvile included in its territory. The town would later be renamed Breckenridge in honor of John Breckinridge, a Confederate Army General and US Vice President.
