The US city of Brownsville is situated in Cameron County in the state of Texas. The city’s estimated population as of 2019 is 182,781, making it the 16th-largest city on Texas and the 131st-largest in the US. Brownsville is known for its Hispanic culture, seaport, deep water, and subtropical climate. The city was established by Charles Stillman, an American entrepreneur, in 1848. It was named in honor of Major Jacob Brown who died fighting while serving as a soldier in the US Army in the Mexican-American War. The war lasted between 1846 and 1848. The city serves as the county seat of Cameron County, making the county and city governments its major employers.
