The US city of Brownwood is located in Brown County, in the state of Texas. The city’s population, according to the 2010 census, was 19,288. Brownwood’s original site was on the eastern side of the Pecan Bayou. However, there was a dispute over water and land rights, forcing many settlers to relocate. Greenleaf Fisk then donated about 60 acres of land to relocate the county seat to the bayou’s western side — the current site of Brownwood. Further, he donated an additional 100 acres for use by the county. The town was then incorporated in 1884. It served as the location for Camp Bowie, a US Army camp.
