The US city of Burnet is situated in Burnet County in the state of Texas. It serves as Burnet County’s county seat. According to the 2010 census, Burnet’s population was estimated at 5,987. The city and county were both named in honor David Burnet, the first president of the Texan Republic. He also served in the Mirabeau Lamar’s administration as Vice President. Burnet was founded in 1852 and originally named Hamilton, after John Hamilton, who owned land nearby. A post office was opened in the area in 1852 and named Burnet Courthouse. In 1858, the town’s name was changed to Burnet since there was another town by the same name.
