Established in July 1856, Camp Verde, Texas in found in Kerr County. It started out as an army post in 1855. It was famous for experiments with camels. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Confederate forces captured the camp in 1861. Four years later, the US Army reoccupied it. Camp Verde General Store is still operating after 150 years. The store acts as a post office and a restaurant to area residents. It opened in 1857 and is now a tourist attraction in that area. As of 2000, the total population was 41.
