Since 1887, Canadian has been the county seat of Hemphill County, Texas. It is referred to as the ‘oasis of the High Plains’. Canadian started as a temporary tent city. The first hotel was built in August 1887 along with the post office. By 1900s, Canadian became a railroad and marketing center. The first annual Cowboys’ Reunion rodeo was hosted in 1888, one of the first in Texas. Oil was discovered in 1955. During the 1970s, Canadian grew due to expansion of oil production. In 1916, the Canadian River Wagon Bridge was built. According to the census of 2000, the population of Canadian was 2,233 people.
