Carlton is a community located in Hamilton County. The land belonged to Dr. F. M. Carlton and J.M Evans. Settlement began in 1877 with H.H Armstrong. Carlton prospered through the late 1870s. By 1877 Carlton possessed its own school and several churches. In 1907, the Stephenville North and South Texas Railway was built through Carlton. Two weekly newspapers served the area- Courier and Citizen. During the 1920s, the Great Depression had a dire effect on Carlton. The population declined from 160 in 1900 to the 70 remaining today. Carlton has one large historic town cemetery. The main remaining building in Carlton is its post office.
